Tobacco Teaching | History, Culture, Health & Ceremony

Tobacco is a sacred medicine for many Indigenous tribes of Turtle Island. It is also a contributing factor to deadly health outcomes for Native people. How did we get from sacred medicine, to global industry? Join us for a conversation with Elders about cultural, historical, and ceremonial uses of tobacco, and hear from a health professional about how commercial tobacco impacts our health and the health of our generations to come.
4-5:30pm. Tobacco Teaching: Ceremonial traditions & contemporary challenges. Speakers include: Linda White Eyes (Omaha), Beau Bordeaux (Lakota), and Renee Sans Souci (Omaha).
This teaching will be the first of two programs about tobacco. At the event on the 30th, we will ask members of the Native Community to share what they would like to learn about tobacco. Those suggestions will help to inform the next tobacco teaching.
These programs are a collaboration between the Intertribal Medicine Collective and the Indian Center. The sessions are free and open to the public, however we highly encourage our Native relatives to attend. These are for you!
If you are a non-Native person who wishes to attend we ask that you be mindful of the following things: These are sacred cultural teachings. Such sacred knowledge is often not shared with people outside of the tribal communities that hold that knowledge. Please understand that many Indigenous people are still experiencing the the trauma of having our ceremonies and medicines policed, and this knowledge taken from us. Consider these realities before your own curiosities. Please hold your questions and allow for the Native community members to engage in sacred tradition of sharing of knowledge. If something is not shared by an Elder, there may be a reason for that.
