In memory of Chris Malkin, Newcastle alderman, macebearer and champion of heritage. About the 2026 Lecture with Miranda Goodby, former Head of Ceramics at The Potteries Museum and Art Gallery.
Newcastle was never a major pottery-making centre, but in the 1680s Dr Plot wrote about the tobacco pipe makers of Newcastle, and a few years later the Dutch Elers Brothers set up their short-lived pottery at Bradwell. In the 18th century fine-quality earthenware was made in Lower Street and experiments were carried out there into in the making of porcelain. Although Stoke-on-Trent was to become the centre of British ceramic industry, pottery making continued in and around Newcastle until the 1950s. This talk will look at some of the well-known – and some of the lesser known - makers within the borough.
