MLAG is proud to host Sara Lindberg Hansen for her first solo exhibition with the gallery. In Lindberg Hansen’s world, installations made from steel, wood, ceramics, and metal chains travers a vertical path from the ceiling of the gallery to the floor suspending symbols and references to a feminist return to Nordic folklore.
In a central work in the exhibition Slattenpatten - translated as ‘flaccid-breasts’ - Lindberg Hansen turns our attention to a troll woman. Slattenpatten is notable for her long hanging breasts stretching down to her knees. In contrast to the elf-girls who are depicted as beautiful, Slattenpatten is considered hideous.
The artist’s approach to sculpture takes the public on a splendid journey towards radical empathy with the aging body and to some extent an invitation to re-enchantment with other bodies. In the exhibition, the artist questions conservative perceptions of the biomorphic. In a posthumanist twist the body becomes a site for narrative and symbolic upheaval and reimagination.
Lindberg Hansen is a sophisticated story teller. The artist describes their work in a fascinating way - multi-dimensional storytelling. In this way, the public is invited to a new materialist organization of the sculpture’s significance against larger questions of acceptance thus finding new ways to narrate care and embody utopia.
The artist perceptively makes a comment on today's need for resilience not only in the field of art, but society more generally. In the Slattenpatten folklore, Slattenpatten eludes the pursuit of King Volmer each night, fleeing across fields, only to rise again the next day—symbolizing fortitude in the face of adversity.
