Tippa Irie - one of the greats; a legend, a teacher and a pioneer of reggae dancehall music in the UK and worldwide comes to Phnom Penh for Crucial Dub Alliance's first session of the season. Tippa Irie, otherwise known as Anthony Henry, is a British Jamaican singer, songwriter, MC and DJ. Hailing from Brixton, South London, he first came to prominence in the early 1980s as an MC in the original Saxon Sound International. Tippas first achieved international exposure in the mid-1980s with the hit singles “It’s Good to Have the Feeling You’re the Best” and “Complain Neighbour” before hitting the UK Top 40 with “Hello Darling”.
Tippa released his first solo album “Is It Really Happening to Me” in 1986. He has had several #1 hits in the UK and around the world including Hello Darling, Raggamuffin Girl featuring Peter Huningale, and Superwoman featuring Winsome. In 2005, Tippa was nominated for a GRAMMY® for Best Rap Song for a tune he wrote with Will.I.Am of the Black Eyed Peas called “Hey Mama” appearing on the BEP album “Elephunk.”
Tippa has toured the world extensively and continues to headline festivals and perform for capacity crowds on every continent.
In 2022, Tippa released his 18th career studio album, “I’m An African”, receiving critically acclaimed reviews from publications and fans around the world. The 16-track album features several well-known artists and draws inspiration from his family’s roots in Africa and Jamaica. Arguably his best work to date, this album reflects a wide range of genres and moves effortlessly between the dancehall and thought-provoking discussion about the state of the world. This work truly exhibits why Tippa is referred to as Mr. Versatile.
