Step into the future of embedded intelligence with “Tiny Powerhouses: LLMs in Microcontrollers” a hands-on, project-based workshop where participants will explore how Large Language Models (LLMs) can operate on microcontrollers.Organized by IEEE NSU Student Branch WIE Affinity Group in collaboration with IEEE NSU RAS Student Branch Chapter, this interactive 3-hour session will be conducted by Mostakim Hossain, Vice Chair (Technical) of IEEE NSU SB WIE AG. Participants will build a voice-controlled story builder assistant using the ESP32-S3 microcontroller, an innovative system that listens to voice commands, converts speech to text through the AssemblyAI API, and generates creative story responses using a locally running LLM. The entire interaction will be displayed on an OLED screen, demonstrating the real-world power of AI in embedded systems.
Participants will work in groups of two to four, encouraging collaboration, teamwork, and problem-solving essential skills for real-world engineering and IoT projects. Throughout the session, they will gain hands-on experience with the ESP32-S3’s hardware capabilities, including PSRAM, I2C, and I2S interfaces. They will also learn how to integrate cloud-based speech-to-text functionality, deploy small-scale LLMs locally on embedded devices, and debug common issues efficiently. All essential components and materials will be provided by the organizers, participants will need to bring their laptop with USB ports and a USB Type-C data transfer cable.
To ensure a smooth experience, a Google Drive link containing all pre-workshop setup instructions and resources have been shared below. This includes installation guides, example codes, and configuration tips for ESP-IDF v5.5.1.
Whether you’re an IoT enthusiast, embedded systems learner, or someone eager to explore how AI and hardware can work together seamlessly, this workshop will provide a powerful glimpse into the next generation of smart, self-contained devices. So join now! Our seats are very limited.
