ABOUT THE "TINY" HOMES

Saint John’s Program for Real Change plans to open 11 modular homes very soon in what organizers call an independent living community for up to 55 formerly homeless women and children. It is one small, but important step in addressing the region’s homelessness crisis. The homes include a kitchen, two bedrooms, one bathroom and 850 square feet of space. They sit on a former parking lot near Saint John’s Program For Real Change, which offers a separate dorm-style residential living for women as they get job training or drug and alcohol treatment. Many of its clients are victims of domestic violence. Each modular unit will house up to two adult women and five children. The adult residents will be required to complete employment and rehabilitation programs and pay approximately $500 in rent, a subsidized amount.

ABOUT THE SAINT JOHN'S CIRCLE

We are a collection of locals who volunteer our time to support the SJPRC through spreading awareness of the cause, organizing small-to-moderate size events to collect physical and monetary donations in fun ways, and assist in bringing volunteer support to the shelter where needed. Interested in joining the mailing list and/or attending monthly meetings, email [email protected]. https://saintjohnsprogram.org/make-a-difference/#circle

ABOUT SAINT JOHN'S PROGRAM FOR REAL CHANGE

Saint John’s is dedicated to the eradication of homelessness for each woman and child it serves. We require a far greater commitment from her than she has ever made. Program residents are not required to pay rent, but must commit to a long-term, all-encompassing program. She must examine her life, past and future, receive in-depth counseling, and further her education. She must participate in employment training at one of our social enterprises, Plates, Just Desserts and First Steps, in which women build work ethic and on-the-job training skills. This sets them up for a new kind of success and presents them as viable candidates for the workforce and a new life. In the past eight years, Saint John’s has evolved from providing emergency shelter only, to a year-long program that provides real change in the lives of women and children who have become homeless. During that same period, we have reduced our reliance on public funding to less than 40% of our $7M budget to have the flexibility to require sobriety of our clients. We rely heavily on private funding to fuel the programs we provide to families who have become homeless.
