In this in-person talk, Dr Timothy Hildebrandt from LSE will discuss how China balances the risks and benefits of NGOs.
About this Event

In this event, Dr Timothy Hildebrandt reflects on his two decades of research on how the Chinese government manages its NGO sector—and how social organisations adapt to the changing political and economic opportunities to do their work. He will also discuss his latest research project in which he and his coauthors use machine learning and big data to do a first-of-its-kind large N study of historical NGO registration in China, revealing how the government balances the risks and benefits of NGOs.

ABOUT THE SPEAKER

Timothy Hildebrandt is Associate Professor of Social Policy and Development. His teaching, at both undergraduate and post-graduate levels, focuses on social policy and development, non-governmental organisations, and sexuality. His research has been published in numerous journals, including The China Quarterly, the Journal of Contemporary China, the Review of International Studies, and Foreign Policy Analysis.
