In ‘TILLGIVENHETEN / 효’, the Confucian-Korean belief of ‘효: hyo’ (referring to a devotion towards one’s parents and ancestors, in the western societies known as filial piety) is examined through the lens of a transnational adoptee. From this perspective, the choreographer (as a South Korean-Swedish adoptee), interrogates the cultural phenomenon in contrast to the Scandinavian understanding of ‘devotion towards family/ancestry’. A theme which is embolied, reimagined and deconstructed into a challenging sensorial performance that traces the loss of a cultural family heritage. The intersection of the choreography, sounddesign, costume, and scenography shapes a pulsing landscape where new forms and depictions of tenderness are envisioned and realised. What at first appears to be innocent—perhaps even beautiful—on the surface, gradually reveals something darker. Elements of tenderness that, in its various forms, may seem soft but constantly teeters on the edge of a stifling grip, where the suffocating expectation on ‘acts of devotion’ hovers over our heads. The polished exterior easily stains, the warm gaze grows distant, and the soft touch turns brash, as the ’devotion’ turns oppressive rather than nurturing.
‘TILLGIVENHETEN / 효’ is Daniel’s third full-length work (following WELL LIT and 100% [Raw Edit Version]), where the critical lens of transnational adoption and queer identity inform the themes and their embodiment.
