Join us for evening one of Till and Sow, a kōrero exploring purposeful work for the good of our city
About this Event

Our Christian faith calls us to work for the Lord, to do everything for his glory. But what does this look like on the ground, in our day-to-day working lives? What does it mean to be a disciple of Jesus Christ in law, business, the arts, social justice, international development, and entertainment? And, is our work actually meaningful in the Kingdom of God?

We warmly invite you to the first conversation of Till and Sow, a collaborative initiative between Laidlaw College, Venn Foundation, and the Auckland Church leaders Association. Over three evenings, we're hearing from business leaders, social justice advocates, and international development experts as they share the challenges and opportunities they’ve faced as disciples of Jesus Christ in their work.

Over drinks and nibbles, you’ll gather with a community of like-minded young professionals and hear from men and women of faith sharing their key learnings, and their journeys toward deeper understanding of God, the world, the church, and their work. Together, we’ll imagine what it might look like to work purposefully for the good of our city.

Our first event will be with guest speakers Israel and Jessica Cooper:

Israel and Jessica are the founders and owners of Home. A national development and construction company that is on a mission to end homelessness. While neither have a background in construction or development, for the last 10 years they have been faithfully working towards bringing redemption to not only the construction industry, but the poor, underprivileged, and homeless in New Zealand and other parts of the world. They seek to practically outwork the fullness of the gospel message in all that they do, from being a good employer, working redemptively within a broken industry, engaging with government and the community services sector, and being contributing members of their local church and wider community.

Israel was educated and trained as an accountant and economist, and spent the first decade of his working life in financial services, software and IT, and tech start-ups. Jessica, a trained early childhood teacher, spent her early working life in the care and teaching of young children, getting involved in the establishment and running of Elim Wellington’s first Early Childhood centre. Together over the past decade they have forged a new partnership in the leadership of Home.

Jessica and Israel live in Christchurch with their three children Zion (13), Alethia (12), and India (9). Their children are an important part of their whole of life calling, and are integrated into all parts of their business and wider vocational callings. Jessica and Israel are active members of their local Arise church, Israel serving as a member of the church board, and both of them running a number of young professional mentoring groups.

Our second evening will be on Wednesday, 22 September with Jessica Palmer. Our third evening will be on Tuesday, 19 October with Phoebe and David Atkinson.

Join us as we seek to follow the ways of Christ in our workplaces, for the good of our city.
