Welcome back to another double-feature event!
WHEN: Saturday December 7 2024 1:00PM to 4:00PM
WHERE: Chinatown Plaza Mall - 106 Keefer Street
Chinese Opera Workshop: This workshop will be taught by Linda - a local Chinatown Elder who was a professional opera director for decades before she came to Canada. Linda has 8 years of opera school under her belt starting at a young age and later studied at an opera university focusing on directing.
In this workshop she’ll show you the basics of opera and perhaps you’ll be able to rehearse a short and impromptu dance with community!
Knot Tying Workshop:
This workshop will be taught by Tajliya Jamal from Go够Studio - a local artist in the community. In this workshop you will learn how to tie Chinese knots in various colours! As knot-tying can be rather dexterous for accessibility and ease the knot tying will be done via pipecleaners. Tassels will be provided to add on to the bottom of your knot!
Go够Studio is a screen printing project prioritizing slow production collaboration and accessible art. It is run by Tajliya Jamal who loves printed matter comics and book forms. To learn more you can find them on instagram at @gogoustudio and @tajliyaj !
Also available during the event we will also be bringing back an expanded selection from William’s Library at the event with newly updated items. Peruse through the unique items available and find something special to take home. We encourage monetary donations (optional) to William’s Library with all proceeds going to @Yarrow Society and their intergenerational work with the Chinatown senior community.
Event Amenities:
Snacks and beverages will be provided courtesy of Chinatown Together throughout the event.
To ensure inclusivity interpretation for instructions will be available in English Cantonese and Mandarin.
Things to bring:
- Water to stay hydrated
- Comfortable clothing for dancing
- A bag if you plan to take home items from William’s Library
In the face of ongoing gentrification it's crucial for us to unite in support of our Chinatown and DTES communities honor our elders and their cultural heritage and revel in the collective joy of artistic expression.
Through each Chinatown Together event we are dedicated to backing grassroots efforts amplifying the genuine voices of our community reclaiming our cultural roots and safe spaces and standing firmly united against encroaching gentrification. Celebrating community joy is our most powerful resistance to these forces - let's come together and celebrate in Chinatown as one!
