Over the course of fifteen years, Max Lockwood and Morgan Haner have built a musical companionship one chorus at a time. As frequent collaborators, they’ve shared the musical vocabulary of rock and roll, country, and folk. With shared influences like Neil Young, The Band, Tom Petty and more, they’ve crafted full-length records like Haner’s 2017 album “Transmitter Blues” (with Lockwood serving as producer and bassist), and supported each other’s live projects, with Haner serving as audio engineer for Lockwood’s Tom Petty tribute, The Insiders.
At the core of this partnership is a respect for the craft of songwriting: its accessibility, its timelessness, and its poetry. Songwriting and musicianship actually run in Lockwood’s family, as demonstrated by his 2024 release of the single “Miss You,” written by his late uncle, William Alan Lesert, who greatly influenced Lockwood’s decision to pursue a career in music. With three solo albums (2014’s “Outrider,” 2019’s self-titled full-length, and 2023’s “Diamonds”) and multiple singles under his belt, Lockwood has more than proven he has the bona fides to continue that musical legacy.
Haner’s path collided with Lockwood’s in 2009 when the two met at DePaul University, where Haner completed his BA in Literature with a concentration in creative writing. Upon completion of the program, Haner released multiple albums and EP’s with Chicago folk-rock band Cavepainters, and from there released two full-length solo LPs: 2017’s “Transmitter Blues” and 2021’s “Pocket Knife,” recorded and produced entirely at home by Haner during the end of the Covid-19 lockdown era. His forthcoming LP features bass and vocals by Lockwood, and additional accompaniments from other members of The Insiders.
Together, these two artists continue to explore the possibilities present in the combination of guitars and language. They share a persistent vision: that songs can continue to connect, inspire, and provoke meaningful experiences not only in listeners, but in each other.

“From the moment he opened his mouth to sing, Eric O’Daly captured the crowd, guiding us through moments of ecstatic outburst, pastoral melancholy, and churning questioning. With the sparkling eyes of a good friend sharing an old joke, he engaged the audience during and between songs. O’Daly’s ability to transform himself to fit the wide-ranging styles of music he performed was echoed in his exchanges with the audience, sometimes displaying a wry wit and other times drawing us in with deeply personal anecdotes. Rich and evocative, his songs are woven together by the threads of authenticity and open-heartedness. I can’t wait to see him again.” - Dave Kozman, KLR Reviews

The Stray is a listening room style venue and cafe, where performers are front and center, not background entertainment. We frequently ask attendees to silence their phones and keep conversations low out of respect to performers and other audience members.
In addition to our craft beer, coffee and wine selection, our kitchen will be open serving our full dinner menu until 9pm! Get here early to snag your favorite seat and grab a bite to eat before the show begins. Save money by getting discounted tickets online in advance.
