Thyagaraaja Pancharathna krithi
Info: The Pancharathna krithis are all composed in raagas known wholly as “Ghanaraagas” meaning they are majestic and fulsome in which the sounds originate from the ‘naabhi’ or the navel. Ghanaraagas provide good scope for composing ‘sangathis’ in both ascending and descending passages. However, this is not the only reason behind grouping the krithis together. The Pancharathna krithis make the most scholarly set of compositions by Thyagaraja. Nattai, Gowla, Arabhi, Varaali and Sri are the raagas used in the 5 krithis respectively. These krithis are designated as the five immortal gems that represent Thyagaraja’s musical genius, understanding of the essence of the Vedanta and unconditional devotion to God.
