Brandon Coleman has been described as a “wonderful composer” and “sophisticated player,” as well as “one of the most unique guitar voices to emerge over the last decade.” Based in Cincinnati, Ohio, Coleman is an in-demand guitarist and composer whose work is intricate, personal, and cinematic—drawing from modern jazz, contemporary classical music, and the folk traditions of his Appalachian roots.
Coleman’s recordings have earned critical praise from Cincinnati CityBeat, which described his music as “an inventively powerful blend of traditional jazz modalities and fusion/prog elements.” His album Infinite Loop was named a “brilliant modern jazz exploration,” with the publication noting that the record documents Coleman’s continued growth as a composer, performer, and improviser, while highlighting the strong musical identity and chemistry of his ensemble.
Widely recognized for his stylistic flexibility, Coleman moves fluidly between songwriter-driven settings, heavy jazz improvisation, and dense modern classical and orchestral environments. Equally at home supporting lyric-forward artists, navigating harmonically rigorous improvised music, or interpreting through-composed contemporary works, he is established nationally as one of the few guitarists capable of authentically straddling these disciplines—bringing a unified artistic voice and refined textural sensibility to each.
As a bandleader, Coleman performs and records with his own projects including Barnweaver, the Brandon Coleman Trio/Quartet, and the large-ensemble work Chaos Magic, which blends jazz improvisation with orchestral string writing and cinematic soundscapes. He is also a sought-after collaborator and has performed and recorded with Emmy-winning cellist and composer Ben Sollee, Grammy-winning violinist Zach Brock, the Sam Blakeslee Quintet and Wistful Thinking, Grammy-winning jazz vocalist Nicole Zuraitis, the Grammy-winning Dan Pugach Nonet, fusion ensemble Spherical Agenda, and appears on Keigo Hirakawa’s Pixel, among many other projects spanning jazz, contemporary classical, and songwriter contexts.
Coleman’s orchestral credits include performances and recordings with the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra, Cincinnati Pops Orchestra, concert:nova, the Kentucky Symphony Orchestra, and the Cincinnati Chamber Orchestra, reflecting a career that comfortably spans jazz clubs, concert halls, and interdisciplinary performance spaces.
He has performed at notable venues including – but not limited to – Smalls, The Blue Wisp Jazz Club, Bop Stop, BluJazz+, Bar Next Door at La Lanterna, 55 Bar, Club Bonafide, The Jazz Estate, Cliff Bell’s, Rudy’s Jazz Room, Jimmy Can’t Dance, and Merriman’s Playhouse, as well as rooms on major touring circuits such as City Winery (Chicago), eTown (Boulder), TACAW (Basalt), Songbirds (Chattanooga), Globe Hall (Denver), Lexington Opera House, and The Kennedy Center’s Millennium Stage.
An active clinician and educator, Coleman has presented masterclasses internationally at institutions including UNAH-VS (San Pedro Sula, Honduras), UNAH (Tegucigalpa, Honduras), UDLA (Quito, Ecuador), Universidad de Loja, West Virginia State University, Morehead State University, the University of Virginia, and Belmont University.
