Join the Thursday Island Reading Series this November as we close out our fall season with the multitalented poet, scholar, and educator Kristen Case. Thursday Island—a collaboration between Devany Doak and Garrett Booksellers, Twice Sold Tales, and The Rustica Journal—invites authors to read their work and, in the spirit of classic Maine summer camps, share a skill or craft with the audience. On Thursday, November 20 at 6pm at Twice Sold Tales, Kristen Case will read from her new work– the immersive, beautifully illustrated Henry David Thoreau’s Kalendar: Charts and Observations of Natural Phenomena–and teach us how to make our own pocket notebooks. Beer, wine, and copies of her books will be available for purchase.
Combining reproductions of Thoreau’s hand-drawn charts with Kristen Case’s transcriptions of the Kalendar’s text and essays, Henry David Thoreau’s Kalendar is a gorgeously crafted volume that illuminates the final project of one of America’s most treasured writers and naturalists and offers a timeless, transformative vision of how to live harmoniously with the living world around us. “It took Kristen Case, with a scholar's eye and a poet's heart, to reveal these baffling works as nothing less than the culmination of Thoreau's life-long artistry,” Laura Dassow Walls, author of Henry David Thoreau: A Life, praises.
Kristen Case is the author of American Pragmatism and Poetic Practice: Crosscurrents from Emerson to Susan Howe and three books of poetry, most recently, Daphne. She has co-edited several essay collections on American writers, most recently the Oxford Handbook of Henry David Thoreau. She lives in Maine.
