Thurgood Marshall Roundabout Statue Unveiling The Columbia Peace and Justice Initiative (CPJI) and the City of Columbia will host an unveiling ceremony for the Thurgood Marshall statue at the new roundabout located at E 8th Street and S Main Street in downtown Columbia on Friday, October 3rd at 5:00 PM.
The roundabout was constructed to improve traffic flow and enhance pedestrian safety in the downtown area. At its center stands a statue of Justice Thurgood Marshall, donated by CPJI, honoring his legal work in Columbia following the 1946 race riot. Marshall, who later became the first African American United States Supreme Court Justice, played a pivotal role in a landmark case in Columbia that helped ignite the modern Civil Rights Movement.
The project highlights Columbia’s ongoing commitment to infrastructure improvements while preserving and honoring the city’s place in civil rights history.
