Stereo (or 3D) photography has been around nearly as long as the invention of photography itself. In the Victorian era, the hand-held stereo viewer was a popular source of home entertainment, long before phonographs or radios arrived on the scene. Today, 3D photography plays a vital role in diverse fields—from NASA’s exploration of distant celestial bodies, to Hollywood’s blockbuster 3D films, to the immersive worlds of video games and virtual reality.
Join presenter Warren Marchioni as he takes you on a captivating journey through the history and technology behind 3D photography. Warren will cover the different techniques used to create stereo images, including digital stereo cameras, paired cameras, anaglyphs, anamorphic art, phantograms, side-by-side stereo pairs, and lenticular prints.
While some of these methods may sound complex, Warren will also show you how easy it can be to create your own 3D photos using just a cell phone. He’ll introduce a free app that allows for post-processing and manipulation of your images, making it accessible for anyone interested in diving into the world of 3D photography.
The presentation will feature exciting demonstrations, and attendees will have the opportunity to experience 3D images firsthand with special glasses (provided). Get ready to be informed, inspired, and amazed!
Warren Marchioni has a long-standing passion for science education and photography, spanning both secondary and university levels. His fascination with perception led him to explore the world of stereo photography, a journey sparked by a vintage film camera that captured stereo images. As technology evolved, Warren began exploring the transition of 3D photography from analog to digital, and how it now influences motion pictures, TV, gaming, and virtual reality.
Warren has previously taught stereo photography workshops at the Liberty Science Center and is currently focused on capturing stunning 3D photographs of the vibrant insect life found in meadows. An active member of the Essex Photo Club, his 3D photos have been featured in exhibitions.
