This Christmas, step into the heart of Buxton for a series of special events celebrating local music, drama, crafts and more. From festive performances to hands-on activities, each event invites you to take part, watch or simply listen, everyone is welcome.Most events run from 4–6pm, are completely free, and suitable for all ages. Along the way, you’ll find opportunities to purchase refreshments and gifts, but there’s absolutely no obligation to do so.
Each participating building or shop has a unique story to share. As you explore, discover Buxton’s heritage through windows that come alive with creativity and community spirit.

Situated on Cavendish Circus, Clowes Chemist is one of Buxton’s longest-standing independent pharmacies, with roots stretching back to the early 20th century. The shop retains its traditional frontage and interior fittings, offering a glimpse into the town’s retail past while continuing to serve the community with modern pharmaceutical care. Its heritage as a trusted local chemist is reflected in the name, which has become synonymous with reliability and personal service across generations.
The business is currently owned and managed by Fraser Clowes, who took over from his father Stuart Clowes, continuing the family’s legacy of independent pharmacy service in Buxton. Fraser brings a fresh energy to the business while honouring its long-standing commitment to the local community.
As part of the Through the Shop Window programme, Clowes Chemist invites visitors to discover curious cures and old-time remedies with a friendly Victorian pharmacist. This drop-in experience blends historical interpretation with theatrical charm, animating the shop with tales of tinctures, tonics, and bygone treatments. It’s a playful nod to Buxton’s spa-town legacy and a chance to explore the quirky side of medical history in a warm, welcoming setting.
