The shop has evolved over generations while retaining its distinctive Victorian charm. With its original fittings, creaking floorboards, and rows of neatly stacked wares, stepping inside Hargreaves feels like entering a living museum of local commerce.
The business is currently owned and managed by Martin Coles-Evans, the fourth generation of his family to run the shop. Martin took over from his parents, Cliff and Teresa Coles, and has guided the company through recent expansions and modernisations while honouring its rich history. Under his leadership, Hargreaves has expanded into the first floor to offer a wider range of quality homewares, kitchenware, and gifts, continuing to serve Buxton with a blend of tradition and innovation.
As part of the Through the Shop Window programme, Hargreaves invites visitors to step into history with a lively, immersive experience: Alice Hargreaves returns to ‘work’ in her shop, brought to life by local performer Charlotte Brindley. Charlotte, known for her engaging character work and warm storytelling style, will be offering playful interactions and a glimpse into Buxton’s retail past.
