USU Extension Thriving Hive Beginning Beekeeping Hands-on Series 2024
February through October!
This class series is designed for first-year beekeepers or those who would like to experience beekeeping before purchasing their first hives. The classes will include in-person lectures and hands-on management of the beehives at Wheeler Farm. This class focuses on the traditional 10-frame Langstroth hive.
Classes will be held the first and third Tuesday of each month from 6:30 pm - 8:30 pm at Wheeler Historic Farm. Exceptions to the schedule may occur due to inclement weather and course topics are subject to change. All in-person meetings will follow COVID guidelines for health and safety.
Course instructors include USU faculty, UDAF employees, and local beekeeping experts.
Cost: $175 per person. $250 per couple. Materials and text are included with the registration fee. Ages 12+

April 2 - Lecture: Starting Your Bees Off Right
April 16 - Lecture: Native bees
Mid-April - Hands-on: Install Bees at Wheeler Farm (*Date dependent on bee delivery and subject to change)
April 30 - Lecture: Honey Bee Pests and Disease
May 7 - Hands-on: In-person workday
May 21 - Hands-on: In-person workday
June 4 - Lecture and Tour: Planting for Pollinators
June 18 - Hands-on: In-person workday
July 2 - Hands-on: In-person workday
July 16 - Hands-on: In-person workday
July 30 - Lecture: Selling your products.
August 6 - Hands-on: In-person Lecture and Honey Harvest
August 20 - Hands-on: In-person workday and honey extraction
September 3 - Lecture: Creating products with honey and wax.
September 17 - Hands-on: In-person workday
October 1 - Lecture: Winterizing the Hive
October 15 - Lecture: Winterize the Hives at Wheeler Farm and Celebrate your first year as a beekeeper!
