In 1990, three of opera’s brightest stars – Plácido Domingo, José Carreras, and Luciano Pavarotti – joined forces for a concert that became a global phenomenon. Their legendary performance in Rome on the eve of the World Cup Final not only won a Grammy Award, but the live album went on to become the best-selling classical record of all time. This trio, famously dubbed “The Three Tenors,” captivated a worldwide audience and forever changed how classical music was perceived and enjoyed. By blending beloved opera arias with popular songs and Neapolitan ballads, they opened up the art form to millions, creating an exuberant crossover appeal that endures to this day. The image of three tenors in formal dress singing together – and taking turns triumphantly delivering Puccini’s “Nessun dorma” as an encore – became an iconic moment that introduced operatic music to new audiences around the globe.Tonight’s concert pays tribute to that legacy of The Three Tenors, bringing together our own trio of outstanding tenors – Wiyoung Oh, Doosuk “David” Yang, and Jungrok “Rok” Oh – in a program of operatic favorites and songs made famous by tenor voices. Under the direction of Palisades Symphony Music Director Dr. Maxim Kuzin, with Guest Conductor Andrew Karatay (the orchestra’s Assistant Conductor) leading on select pieces, the orchestra and soloists will recreate the magic of a Three Tenors-style gala. The repertoire ranges from sparkling opera overtures and heartfelt arias to spirited Neapolitan songs and grand finales, offering something for every music lover. Just as the original Three Tenors combined high art with popular appeal, our concert will whisk the audience from the comic zest of Rossini to the passion of Puccini, from Vienna’s elegant waltzes to the sunny streets of Naples – all in one unforgettable evening. So sit back and enjoy this musical journey, as our three tenors and orchestra raise their voices in celebration of operatic music’s most glorious hits and the enduring inspiration of The Three Tenors’ legacy.
