So, here's some lovely news.Former Tasmanian Premier Lara Giddings will join me for an "In Conversation" event about Three Juliets at Fullers Bookshop on Tuesday, April 15.
Three Juliets explores - in fiction - the issue of forced adoption, a subject close to Lara's heart. Some of you might remember this moment in State Parliament in October 2012, when she delivered a heartfelt apology to Tasmanians affected by past forced adoption. Her speech was nuanced, acknowledging the pain of mothers, fathers, children, families affected by forced adoptions but also validating the experiences of those for whom adoption was a more positive experience. The Hansard transcript, well worth a read, is here: https://www.findandconnect.gov.au/pubresource/apology-to-people-hurt-by-past-forced-adoption-practices/
Like me, Lara was born in 1972, the peak year for adoptions in Australia, when some 10,000 babies were adopted. The following year, when the Whitlam government introduced the Supporting Mothers Benefit, adoption numbers plummeted. Let that sink in for a moment.
If you'd like to hear Lara and I talking about all of this, and more, please come along: https://www.fullersbookshop.com.au/event/three-juliets-minnie-darke/
