About this Event
Foundry Steamboat Chief Clinical Officer Dr. Michael Barns, Ph.D., presents:
Transgenerational Impact of Trauma in
Addiction on Client and Family Coping
What would happen to our treatment outcomes if we were to
really treat addiction like the chronic disease that we say it is? This
presentation will apply lessons learned from how chronic disease is
managed in integrated medical environments, through the lens of
medical family therapy, and through the lens of transgenerational
and family system trauma theory. The goal will be for attendees
to consider the need for a paradigm shift in how families are
incorporated into the addiction treatment process. Attendees will
learn about the phases of the chronic disease process and the
developmental tasks for families in each phase. Dr. Barnes will discuss
clinical implications and introduce Foundry’s family-centered clinical
program for treating families who are struggling with addiction.

NorthStar Transitions Chief Clinical Officer Fatina Cannon, LPC LAC, presents:
Embodied Learning in
the Group Therapy Setting
Research has shown that therapeutic approaches incorporating
embodied learning create more sustainable behavioral change and
a greater sense of efficacy in participants. Traditional speaker/listener
approaches to group therapy often support therapeutic goals of
belonging and building motivation for behavioral change. Still, they can
fall short in helping clients integrate skills outside of the therapy room.
In this workshop, we will discuss the principles of embodied learning
and Kolb’s Learning Cycle. We will explore a framework for facilitating
embodied learning and tools to experience movement and art-based
interventions to apply concepts in a group therapy setting.
