Thomas Wenglinski is a composer, arranger, and pianist from Houston, Texas. Born into a musical family, he was brought up listening to the jazz fusion of artists such as Pat Metheny and Wayne Shorter, and by high school he was regularly composing and recording music as well as playing piano in his high school’s jazz band.
In 2016, Thomas headed west to The University of Texas at Austin, where he studied jazz composition under the direction of Jeff Hellmer and Dr. John Mills. Over the course of four years, he premiered over 30 new works with the school’s big bands. During this time, he also began gigging as a pianist in the Austin area, sharing the stage with artists such as Christopher Cross’s Freedonia, Lex Land, BluMoon, Big Wy’s Brass Band, Christian Wiggs, and Daniel Dufour. After completing his undergraduate degree in May of 2020, Thomas enrolled at the University of Miami, where he is pursuing his master’s degree under the direction of Dr. Stephen Guerra. Thomas cites Stevie Wonder, Keith Jarrett, Genevieve Artadi, and Vince Mendoza as several of his biggest musical influences.
Paulo Santos is a jazz saxophonist, flautist, and woodwind player born and raised in Austin, Texas. From a musical family, Santos began studying classical flute at 11 years old and has continued his formal education at the University of Texas Butler School of Music where he currently pursues a bachelor’s degree in jazz saxophone and composition under professors Jeff Hellmer, John Mills, and John Fremgen.
As an avid composer, Santos’ small group and large ensemble compositions and arrangements are often featured by UT’s jazz orchestra and A.I.M.E., as well as the local N.O.W. Jazz Orchestra. His playing can be heard on the Big Wy’s Brass Band EPs ‘Portal to Funkville’ and ‘Lord Dope,’ funk band Flyjack’s recent album ‘Soul Catcher,’ and ‘The Genesis,’ from trumpeter David Young’s jazz project Detroit City. Santos has had the opportunity to perform with many well-renowned musicians such as Randy Brecker, Joe Lovano, Michael Dease, Andre Hayward, Conrad Herwig, Francis “Rocco” Prestia and Ray Greene of Tower of Power, among others.
