BASICz™ – Learn to Saw™: De-Mystifying the Jewelers Saw – (2 Day Combined Workshops)SKILL LEVEL: Beginner to Advanced

Over the past 40 years, artist Thomas Mann has trained over 450 studio employees of Thomas Mann Design to use this essential jewelry making tool. As a result, he researched, refined and delineated all of the components of the saw, the frame and the hand grip, but in particular the very fine multi-toothed saw blade it employs to determine how it actually performs its job.
The Jeweler’s Saw is one of the most amazing tools on the planet. And unlike scissors or a razor knife, it is capable of extracting very precise shapes from a wide variety of materials, from paper to steel. It can be used in a multitude of sawing operations, on and off the jewelry bench. But it’s a tricky little tool to learn, and has never come with instruction of use at the purchase point, until Tom and studioFLUX developed the kit which eventually lead to producing the book Metal Artists Workbench: Demystifying the Jeweler’s Saw published by Northlight books in 2011.
Learn to Saw™ proved to be so effective that he is able to take a student, completely unfamiliar with this tool, and have them sawing like a professional with an hour or two of instruction and practice.
You will leave this session with two hand-made mini-slot sculptures and various charms.
Note: An essential kit of materials is included in the workshop fee. You can also purchase a kit which includes all materials, tools and an instructional DVD to keep you practicing what you’ve learned for $55. The Learn to Saw kit includes Tom’s own bench pin design, which was licensed by Eurotool Jewelry Arts tool company.

FASTENation™ is a FASTENating, inventive and revelatory 1-day tour of the cold connection techniques Tom has been employing in his work for more than thirty years, with a highlight on the tools that make it all possible. Most important is the Flexible Shaft Machine, which employs a variety of “bits” ranging from drills to burrs of various types, all of which are essential to making those COLD CONNECTIONS!
You’ll encounter his unique perspective on riveting, slots & tabs, and especially his very personal “miniature bolting system™”. You’ll see demonstrations of these and other innovative cold connection solutions, as well as having a hands on opportunity to practice using the tools and materials in this informative workshop. Prepare to be FASTENated! ��All tools are provided, and an essential kit of materials is included in the workshop fee.
You will leave this session with a hand-made sculptural pendant or key fob.
Refunds less credit card fees are available up to 2 weeks before the workshop begins. After that period, the fee is non-refundable. However, you may transfer your ticket to a friend.
