Join us for a screening of This World Is Not My Own, a powerful documentary that brings to life the story of self-taught artist Nellie Mae Rowe. Born with an innate artistic gift, Nellie faced countless obstacles before she could fully dedicate herself to her craft.
Through chewing gum sculptures, a wealthy gallerist, a firebrand wrestler, a notorious M**der case, and the segregated South, Nellie created a boundless world of imagination. Her "Playhouse" became a living work of art, filled with vibrant drawings, sculptures, and collected objects.
This visually stunning film blends traditional documentary storytelling with animation and scripted reenactments featuring Uzo Aduba and Amy Warren to bring Nellie's world to life.
