In conjunction with our provocative exhibit "Stop the Presses! Fake News and the War of 1898," we are proud to present “This Was the First I Felt of War”: Frederic Remington in the Field, a talk by Dr. Laura Desmond. Join us on Sunday, June 26th at 3pm in the Music Room of Plant Hall for this fascinating presentation.
The son of a Civil War hero, Frederic Remington’s artistic career was marked by an abiding interest in military subjects, and he sought out opportunities to witness the U.S. Army in action. When commissioned as a war correspondent to cover the War of 1898, Remington was excited to see war firsthand. But the reality of combat was different from his eager anticipation, and had an indelible impact on Remington’s art. Attendees can view early sketches by Remington and get a sense of how Remington’s experiences in the field affected the subsequent course of his career.
Dr. Laura Desmond is the Curator and Educator at the Frederic Remington Art Museum in Ogdensburg, where she works to expand and deepen understanding and appreciation of Frederic Remington's work. As Museum Curator, she is responsible for the world's largest collection of paintings, drawings, sculptures, and sketches by Remington, and oversees the research, design, installation, and presentation of exhibitions at the Museum, including those of works by contemporary artists. She creates the Museum's interpretive and educational programs, and is passionate about giving Museum visitors memorable experiences in the visual arts. She has previous Museum experience in collections, exhibitions, and program delivery at the Potsdam Public Museum and at the Richard F. Brush Art Gallery, and a background in teaching at the college and university level.
“This Was the First I Felt of War”: Frederic Remington in the Field is a rare opportunity to hear Dr. Desmond and view images of seldom-seen sketches made by Remington during his time with the U.S. Army in Tampa and in Cuba. This event is free and open to the public. For more information visit www.plantmuseum.com or call 813.254.1891.
