"This River Is Our Relative" is a 2023 Sunlight Media Collective documentary about the Penobscot Nation's intrinsic kinship connection to and tireless environmental advocacy for the Penobscot River. The story is told through the voices of 24 Penobscot people, who share their experience of historical, physical, and spiritual connection to place; of cultural identity and survival. Their narratives are interwoven with a traditional Wabanaki story about how The People and Glouskap defeated a greedy monster frog, Aklebemu, who was hoarding all the water.
Join us on Sunday, June 2, 2024 for a film screening at 12:30 p.m. followed by a conversation with Penobscot filmmakers and participants Kathy Paul (Penobscot elder, the film’s co-director and participant) and Jan Paul (Penobscot DNR Water Quality Dept, film participant). The film is about an hour and appropriate for all ages.
This event is hosted by the Wabanaki Ally Team at First Parish. Come early during coffee hour at 11:45 am for a light lunch served by the WAT. The Parish Hall is accessible from Congress Street by stairs (right entrance) or by elevator from the back entrance (alley off Chestnut Street between First Parish and Portland High School.
You are also invited to join our Sunday morning worship at 10 a.m. with a related topic. The worship service will be broadcast on our website, but film and conversation are in person only.
