This Place Meant - Destination 3 - Boxley

This Place Meant is an immersive sound pilgrimage tracing Kent’s historic heritage sites. The project reimagines pilgrimage through sound, exploring themes of movement, belonging, displacement, and our relationship with the landscapes that shape us.

Travelling to 11 sites along Kent’s ancient pilgrimage routes, we collaborate with local artists and communities to map ideas of heritage — discovering what this place meant for those before us, and what it means today. We hope you will join us along the way. 

This beautiful church has been a sanctuary of peace and worship since the 12th century, adjoining the "village green" in the centre of Boxley village, with the North Downs as a backdrop. Over the centuries it functioned as a focal point for village worship, baptisms, marriages, and burials, especially as pilgrimage activity increased in the area.

This sound meditation invites you into deep listening, stillness and contemplation. The session is improvised and will include gongs, bowls, voice, monochord, and other instruments.

You are welcome to attend any part of the event using your ticket.

• 1pm-1.30pm – Arrival + optional tour (approx. 30 mins)
• 1.30pm-2pm – Short break; hot drinks available
• 2pm-3pm – Sound bath (approx. 1 hour)
• 3.30pm-4pm – Tea + optional reflection / social time

If attending the sound meditation only, please arrive by 1.45pm.

Sound Emergence is a contemplative sound practice led by André Braga-Verissimo and Sasha Maye Bruce. Their work brings together sound, heritage and community to create immersive listening experiences across Kent and beyond. They explore sound as a form of contemplation, deep listening, and collective gathering, working across art, music and history.

This event is primarily seated, though some venues may allow limited space to lie down. Please bring:

• A mat, blanket and/or pillow (if you intend to lie down come early as very limited floor space in this church) 
• A small cushion for your comfort (to seat down)
• Warm clothing (venues can be cool)

Hot and cold drinks will be available.

Please contribute according to your financial circumstances. Paying the upper tier supports the project and helps us offer lower-cost access.

Suggested contribution: £5 – £20 per place. Please book a ticket for every person in your party, including children.

A FULL SERIES ticket for This Place Meant is available for £25, allowing attendance at as many events as you wish.

Children are welcome if they can remain quiet throughout the 45–60 minute sound bath. It may not be suitable for very young children. All children must be accompanied by an adult at all times. They are welcome to attend the tour even if the sound bath is not suitable for them

André works across sound, DJing, puppetry and performance.Founder & Artistic Director of Sound Emergence, he explores sound as a contemplative and communal practice, bridging art, heritage and collective listening. He has 15 years’ experience as an arts facilitator across charities, education and cultural organisations.

Sasha is Co-Lead Artist on the Soundbath Pilgrimage and the project’s Mental Health Advisor. She is a psychotherapist, sound practitioner, and body-based Pesso Boyden therapist specialising in holistic, integrative therapy. She is also a Mental Health First Aider with 15 years’ leadership experience across sectors.
