This is Where You Are /
Artists of all ages are invited to submit artwork in response to a recent local municipal beautification project’s call to artists with the theme “You Are Here.” “This is Where You Are” will serve as an alternative invitation illustrating the juxtaposition of loving where we live while highlighting the environmental hazards and challenges that our communities continue to face everyday. Corporate extraction and industrial military pollution of air, water, and soil are a fixture of living in the New River Valley, Southwest Virginia, and Central Appalachia. Our communities deserve to see the full picture of where we are as part of our path to creating a more healthy and livable future in our region.
The realities of living in the New River Valley are often hidden from the public eye, especially amidst two large universities and local governments that have suppressed information about the burdens we face in order to advance so-called “economic development” and continue drawing people to the area. Local powers boast of a sustainable community, but all it takes is to zoom out ever so slightly to see the destruction, environmental injustice, and toxic pollution that is hidden from the bubble of Blacksburg and local academia. We cannot continue to look the other way while downstream communities and our neighbors continue to shoulder the burden and cost of negligent extractive industries.
Help us highlight local artists and create a connection between who you are, where you are, and the realities we all face together while living here in the New River Valley, Southwest Virginia, and Central Appalachia by submitting your work and joining us on April 25th at the Blacksburg Library from 6:00 to 8:00 PM for the art show.
