About this Event
As of November 30, 2024, there were 476,860 registered voters in the District of Columbia. Yet, history shows that voter participation declines during non-presidential election cycles even though more District-wide seats are often on the ballot. The data also reveals a deeper challenge: consistent participation disparities across the city. Wards 7 and 8, home to some of the District’s highest concentrations of Black residents, as well as higher rates of housing instability and poverty, have recorded the lowest voter turnout in every election since at least 2014.
“This Is Our DC: A People’s Forum and Town Hall” is a direct response to that reality.
Hosted by the Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., DC ALPHAS invitations to participate have been sent to all candidates for D.C. Delegate, D.C. Mayor, and Council At-Large to engage directly with residents in a community-centered conversation about the priorities, challenges, and opportunities shaping life in Wards 7 and 8, and across the District.
Through intentional outreach and a citywide digital awareness campaign, DC ALPHAS seek to ensure every eligible voter has access to clear, practical information about what’s on the ballot and why it matters. This forum is designed to break down complex issues, make policies tangible, and connect residents with candidates, issue experts, and civic resources in one accessible space.
This town hall centers the voices of everyday residents, including returning citizens, cultural leaders, parents, youth, and community advocates. It affirms a simple but powerful truth: the future of Washington, DC belongs to the people who live here.
The event is free and open to the public and will provide a welcoming, family-friendly environment where children are encouraged to attend and witness civic engagement in action. Refreshments will be provided.
