History often flattens women into saints or villains, but real lives are far more complex. This talk by Dr. Marea Colombo (Department of Psychology, University of Otago) will explore the life of Victorian philanthropist Angela Burdett-Coutts through the making of a recent stage production about her legacy. Focusing on the devising process, we’ll discuss how historical research becomes theatre, how creative ideas are developed collaboratively, and how artists shape complex histories into compelling performance without simplifying the people at their centre.
