About this Event

Third Thursday Lecture Series

Join us in person for an engaging evening with Dr. Rebecca Leber-Gottberg as she dives into History & Memory: The Art of Emily Lunde.

Emily Lunde was born in rural Minnesota in 1914. Her father died when she was five years old, and Emily and her two sisters were raised by her immigrant grandparents on a farm. Memories of those days are the inspiration for much of her work. Emily left home at the age of 18 and went to work as a maid in Grand Forks, North Dakota. Although always interested in art and painting, Emily married and raised four children before beginning to paint seriously in 1974, at the age of 60. In the vein of Grandma Moses, Emily Lunde's works are a form of "memory painting", but they also reflect the more humorous side of life in a small town.

Emily Lunde’s work is included in a number of important private and public collections in the United States. Paintings by Emily Lunde were found in U.S. Embassies around the world under the Friends of Art and Preservation in Embassies Project, the American Folk Art Museum in New York City, the Gerald R. Ford Presidential Library in Deerborn, MI, and in many private homes throughout the United States.

It's a relaxed space to explore fascinating stories and ideas that shape how we remember the past. Don’t miss out on this chance to connect, learn, and chat with others who love history and art as much as you do!

Rebecca Leber-Gottberg can be better recognized as one of the co-owners of Rediscovered Books and former Events Coordinator. It is not quite certain if she moonlights in the bookstore business or as an historian/History Professor. Either way, her love and curiosity for stories has fueled her passion in both realms and she is looking forward to sharing it with you.
