CONVERSATION: Movement, Memory, Land
Listen to “Broken Boxes” artists Joseph M. Pierce, Christine Howard Sandoval, and exhibition co-curator Josie Lopez talk about migration, memory and land, and how their respective practices reflect and uncover what it means to belong.
Joseph M. Pierce, a citizen of the Cherokee Nation, focuses on kinship, gender, and race in Latin America in his work. An author and co-curator of the performance series “Knowledge of Wounds,” Pierce is and has published extensively on queer and Indigenous studies. He is an Associate Professor at Stony Brook University.
Christine Howard Sandoval, a member of the Chalon Nation, is an interdisciplinary artist exploring themes of representation and habitation in perfor¬mance, video, and sculpture. Her place-based instal¬lations often explore the limits of materials as they en¬gage with land, water, and culture. Her work has been exhibited internationally, and she is an Assistant Pro-fessor at Emily Carr University.
