What to Expect:The Leon Sinks Geological Area (LSGA) is part of the Apalachicola National Forest, managed by the U.S. Forest Service. There is a $5 per vehicle entry fee for all visitors. The LSGA is home to some fascinating geology, beautiful sinkholes, and all sorts of wonderful wildflowers and wildlife. The trails have more hills and slightly steeper terrain than most hiking trails in Florida, but the footing on the trails is generally safe and comfortable, and is rarely difficult or treacherous. The overall rating for the hiking trails is "easy". That said, almost any outdoor experience in Northwest Florida comes with the risk of exposure to sun, heat, humidity, biting insects, and poison ivy. Please bring appropriate hiking/walking shoes, clothing, sun hat, plenty of water, sunscreen, bug protection, snacks as needed, and a positive attitude. Enthusiasm for our local natural wonders is a bonus, and we invite you to share what you know about our local flora, fauna, and natural history. We promise to do the same on every hike. We meet at 9:00 a.m. during the warmer months of May-October, and 10:00 a.m. during the cooler months of November-April. Plan to arrive 10-15 minutes early if possible to avoid waiting in line at the pay station.
