“a brilliant and moving performance [paying] tribute to Hussain and the humanistic values at the heart of his art” — The New York Times
A beloved presence on the CAP UCLA stage, the legendary Zakir Hussain left an indelible mark on our community and the world of music. In a moving tribute to his legacy, Grammy-winning ensemble Third Coast Percussion returns with a powerful concert that honors their collaboration with the late tabla master.
At the heart of the program is Murmurs in Time, a major new work commissioned by the ensemble and composed by Hussain before his passing. Fusing the rhythmic complexity of Hindustani classical music with the bold, boundary-pushing voice of contemporary percussion, the piece features tabla virtuoso Salar Nader, a lifelong disciple of Hussain, performing his mentor’s role with reverence and vitality.
The evening also features solo tabla work by Nader in honor of Hussain, and newly commissioned compositions by genre-defying composer/performers Jessie Montgomery, Tigran Hamasyan, and Jlin.
Join us for a singular night of rhythm, memory, and musical innovation — celebrating an artist whose spirit continues to echo on the CAP UCLA stage and far beyond.
