Thin Line Short Block #2

Welcome to the block where obsession becomes art, and art occasionally slamming two cars into each other at a demolition derby while filmed on gorgeous 16mm. Whether it's Mitch Blank cramming Bob Dylan’s entire legacy into a Manhattan apartment the size of a broom closet, or Oliver Peck chasing a world record one tiny "13" at a time, these are stories of devotion, destruction, and divine weirdness. We’ve got violas, vintage guitars, very bad ice, and a luthier who cannot stop bumping into rock stars. From tattoo parlors to orchestra pits, this is a cinematic mix tape of the passionate, the peculiar, and the persistently unsung. Bring tissues, earplugs, and maybe a notebook — this screening might get a bit loud but we will have lots of filmmakers and subjects in attendance for a post screening Q and A, and there will be an exam afterwards.
My Back Pages - dir. Nick Canfield, Paul Lovelace
A portrait of Mitch Blank, the world’s foremost collector of Bob Dylan memorabilia and recordings, all kept in his tiny New York City apartment. This short documentary follows Mitch as he donates his life’s work to the Bob Dylan Center in Tulsa, Oklahoma. It is a voyage into the ephemera of one of the greatest American musicians, a study on the nature of collecting and what it means to devote your life to something - then let it go forever.
Wrecked a Bunch of Cars and Had a Good Time - dir. James P. Gannon (In Attendance)
In America, the things we create we also find a way to destroy. We follow four people who have never met, but will smash each other to smithereens in a Demolition Derby.
Bad Ice - dir. Andrew Valentine (In Attendance)
Every winter, people from all over the world gather at Lake Okoboji to dive under the ice. The winter of 2024 was the warmest winter on record... meaning this year it is Bad Ice.
Take Me to Hawkins Texas - dir. Stephan Farina, Ben Fenton
Kelly Barber, a small town luthier with a knack of running into famous people around the world has put Hawkins on the map. Kelly wants to pass the baton but no one wants him to leave.
Dale - dir. Justin Streichman (In Attendance)
In a field historically dominated by white men, Dale Hikawa was the first Asian woman to join the Los Angeles Philharmonic. She then advanced through the ranks to become the acting principal of the viola section, paving new roads as a Japanese American musician. Looking back on her long career, this trailblazing violist reflects on the meaning of her life’s work. DALE both illuminates and leaves mysterious those whose lives are devoted to following a muse.
The Number 13 - Justin Wilson (In Attendance)
Thousands of tattoo shops around the world celebrate Friday the 13th by giving small, inexpensive numbers 13s, a tradition that started in Dallas, Texas. Follow Oliver Peck as he races to achieve the Guinness World Record of most 13 tattoos done in 24 hours. Along the way, we learn from a variety of interesting personalities like Frank Turner, Henk Schiffmacher and Angeliska Polacheck about the superstitious nature of the number 13 and it's place within tattoo culture, gang culture and astrology.
Kalamazoo Gals - David Massar (In Attendance)
When music journalist John Thomas discovers a mysterious archival photo, the ensuing odyssey reveals a shameful chapter in the history of the iconic Gibson guitar company. During World War II, with instrument production supposedly suspended, an extraordinary group of women toiled secretly behind the scenes, creating the “Banner Gibsons” that are cherished to this day by musicians and collectors the world over. From Nashville to Kalamazoo, this short documentary explores the hidden legacy of these craftswomen, and the trials of female artists and others in the industry who struggle not to be erased from the American Story. Featuring Tommy Emmanuel, Jennifer Nettles, Kamara Thomas and others.
