About this Event
Ori Dagan and Karin Plato share a love of singing and swinging! Both are inspired by some of the world’s great vocal jazz artists: Sheila Jordan, Nat King Cole, Peggy Lee, Frank Sinatra, Nina Simone, and others. They also share a common love for the songs composed by Gershwin, Berlin, Jobim, Ellington and others.
Making his Vancouver debut, Toronto based Ori Dagan will share the stage with Vancouver based vocalist Karin Plato in "Theses Are a Few of Our Favourite Tunes" where they will sing duets and solo songs in an exciting program that will be engaging and heartwarming. You may hear an original song or two at the concert! Over the years Ori has composed wonderful original songs including "Viruses," which netted him a Grand Prize at the Great American Songwriting Contest in 2022. George W. Harris of Jazz Weekly proclaimed: "Rare are the male singers these days who are just as clever with the pen as the vocal sword.”
“Her vocals are often beautifully understated, yet, with such an expert control of her instrument, she brings fresh readings of old standards and crafts her own intricate tunes with a delivery that sounds effortless.” Dianne Donovan - Voices in Jazz CKUA Radio Network
Ori and Karin are delighted to be joined by two of Vancouver's finest jazz musicians for this concert: Chris Sigerson on the piano and Conrad Good on the bass.
BIO BACKGROUND
Award-winning jazz singer-songwriter Ori Dagan has attracted a dedicated and growing audience, both in his native Toronto and internationally. He brings a wry and agile sense of swing to everything he does, whether interpreting a standard, spinning a pop tune on its head or introducing his own original music and lyrics. Dagan's rich bass-baritone is unmistakable. His consistently forward-thinking style is inspired by hundreds of heroines and heroes, including Sheila Jordan (with whom Dagan recorded a duet in 2017).
Kicked off by the audaciously truthful "Viruses," which netted him a Grand Prize at the Great American Songwriting Contest, Dagan’s 2022 release "Click Right Here" solidifies his strengths as a lyricist. The album is a darkly humorous tongue-in-cheek sendup of life in the digital age, with songs about online dating, social media and other 21st century blues ironically paired with the old-school sound of an 8-piece jazz band. "Click Right Here" was praised by John Devenish of JAZZ.FM91 as “fun, provocative, fancy-free and spirited,” while George W. Harris of Jazz Weekly proclaimed: "Rare are the male singers these days who are just as clever with the pen as the vocal sword. Toronto-based Ori Dagan fits into that category with this clever release of mostly originals."
Canadian vocalist and composer Karin Plato came to jazz by accident. The music she heard in her formative years was the rock and pop music of the day and the classical music she studied from an early age. She didn’t get the “jazz bug” until she was in her early 30’s and that’s when her music career really began when she made the move from central Canada to the West Coast.
Karin has performed across Canada and in some areas in the USA and she continues to work in Vancouver as a music educator, pianist, vocalist, and arranger. She is a Juno nominated artist, West Coast Music Awards nominee and three times nominated Canadian Jazz Vocalist of the Year at the National Jazz Awards in Toronto.
