“Ragtime” dominated American music from about 1896 to 1920. Its syncopated sounds are entrenched in the nation’s memory as a soundtrack to the era, and endure as part of the fabric of the nation’s music. But ragtime’s journey began with Black folk music, moving through the minstrel show, vaudeville and Tin Pan Alley, before being reabsorbed by folk musicians, with whom it still remains. Today, we’ll take a look at this remarkable journey and set it against the fortunes of its originators, as Black Americans moved from slavery, to the hope that came with emancipation, through the descent into segregation.
