The story is true. Soren Staff and Beau Janke met as counselors at a bible [summer] camp in northern Wisconsin in 2013. During the week they played songs with the kids around a campfire and during the weekend they tried to figure out all the Trampled By Turtles and Avett Brothers songs they could muster. They both grew up amidst an amazing stretch of land full of glacial melt-carved river valleys in the upper Midwest that the early French trappers called coulees. Another camp counselor took to teasing them, “here come them coulee boys.” In 2014, they added Soren’s brother Jens on mandolin, and a rough-around-the-edges, stomping 3-piece folk band, played their first show as Them Coulee Boys. Four years later Neil Krause joined to play acoustic and electric bass, and in 2019 when Stas Hable joined on drums, TCB evolved into a full-on americana rock band.
