An enchanting story written by home-grown poet Asha Lovegrove, accompanied by live piano, about how wonderful our connection to trees can be. Includes a botanical scavenger hunt and a few surprises. Storyteller and Ecologist Rosi Merz and Musician Joe Dobson present, “Thelonious Tree”, an evocative and interactive kids show that will take place in the heart of the beautiful Bason Botanical Gardens. The Baby Grand awaits. How did it get here? How will it speak with these trees?
“Thelonious Tree” is funded by Creative Communities Whanganui, and endorsed by the Bason Botanical Gardens Trust. Entry is by Koha on the day, with all proceeds being donated to the Bason Botanical Gardens Trust.
This event is ideal for kids aged between 4-10 years and can be enjoyed by anyone!
IMPORTANT: A postponement due to bad weather with be made by 10am On the day of the event (if not before). So please make sure you check this event before heading out!
Please arrive by 1.30pm to allow yourself to settle in for a 2pm performance start, Please park your car in the top car park, and walk down the millennium stairs to find the event. Disability/movement impaired people: Please drive down and park right next to the event.
Do bring weather appropriate clothing, water, your own picnic, a picnic rug.

Rosi Merz is an Ecologist with a passion for play, education and creating treasure hunts. As a Forest Sanctuary Manager her work is to thoroughly understand natural ecosystems and to harness that knowledge to craft the most appropriate restoration strategies. Combining this with her creative skills as a storyteller, artist and dancer she inspires to reflect on the deep and beautiful connections we hold with nature.
Joe Dobson is an enthusiastic Advocate and Enabler for arts events. He is a passionate supporter of local Fringe and Arts festivals, both as an organiser and a performer. Joe is an experienced and well regarded musician who has collaborated with many New Zealand and international artists over his career. He currently plays with alternative jazz group The Revolutionary Arts Ensemble and world music group ISH.
‘Undergrand’ is an initiative based on a white baby grand piano and the means to transport it into unusual spaces. Undergrand collaborates with artists for community events and festivals.
