About The Play:
Eugène Ionesco, the master of the absurd, is back. The Planet Ant Black Box this October brings Ionesco back to Detroit with his most seminal absurdist work, The Bald Soprano.
Referred to as an Anti-play, The Bald Soprano begins in a quiet, cozy English living room where nothing seems out of the ordinary. Mr. and Mrs. Smith, your average, everyday English couple, are having a very strange conversation.
Welcome to a world where conversations spiral into chaos and the absurd is the closest thing to the truth. A whirlwind of strange encounters, unexpected twists, and plenty of head-scratching moments, keeps the action moving in this classic work. It’s funny, it’s bizarre, and it’s guaranteed to leave you questioning everything.

About the Playwright:
Eugène Ionesco was widely renown as the master of absurdity, a playwright who tuned language and logic to a different dimension. Born in Romania and raised in France, Ionesco became a leading figure in the "Theatre of the Absurd." He delighted in exposing the ridiculousness of everyday life, poking fun at society’s conventions and human communication. His plays, like The Bald Soprano and Rhinoceros, are surreal, hilarious, and unsettling, full of wit and existential pondering. Ionesco’s work invites audiences to laugh, question reality, and embrace the strange—because in his world, the absurd is the only honest truth.
About the Director:
Chuck Reynolds is a Detroit-based multi-award-winning actor, director, and founder of the Abreact Theatre, which he co-founded in 2000. Known for its grassroots model, the Abreact became a revered staple in Detroit's theater scene until its closure. Reynolds’ vision was to create a space for innovative, unconventional works, often embracing absurdist and avant-garde productions by playwrights like Samuel Beckett and Edward Albee. His hands-on approach as both actor and director made him a key figure in keeping Detroit's underground theater culture vibrant.
With a B.A. in Theater from Wayne State University, Chuck has performed and directed in numerous theaters throughout Southeast Michigan, including the Detroit Repertory Theatre and Planet Ant. His work is characterized by a passion for collaboration, where he’s known for pushing actors to new heights, offering fresh interpretations of both familiar and obscure works. Reynolds’ legacy includes fostering a devoted community of theatergoers and creating one of Detroit's most intimate and beloved performance spaces.
