About this Event

Please join Black Magic Woman Production on Monday, October 7th, at 6 pm for a free reading of Alice Childress's Wine in the Wilderness. Light refreshments will be provided.

It's the summer of 1964, and Harlem is burning. Hunkered down during a riot, Bill works on a triptych to represent African-American womanhood.

The first painting shows an innocent black girl. The middle one depicts a regal black woman dressed in African garb—Bill's ideal black woman. For the third panel, Bill wants to paint a “down-and-out woman,” a representation of how society has diminished his female contemporaries. Enter Tommy. Bill sees her as the perfect “messed-up chick” he needs to complete his masterpiece. Tommy sees herself as “Wine in the Wilderness.” Whose beliefs will change?

Black Magic Woman Productions grew out of a need to create opportunities for theatre artists of color. Since 2006, BMW Productions has promoted an appreciation for the African-American theatre canon. Led by playwright Renee Lucas Wayne, this group of actors, playwrights, and directors continues to develop new works, re-imagine the Classics, and provide access to theatre for underserved communities.

This programming is supported by the LEDC's Art Committee, a volunteer group of The Lansdowne Economic Development Corporation.
