Step into history and community at York Fest with the York River Loop Tour, a ceremonial experience both on the water and on shore.
What to Expect
- Ceremonial Boat Loop – Join Captain John “Bubba” Washington and a fleet of Black boat captains as they lead a symbolic ride along the Columbia River in honor of York, the legendary explorer who journeyed with Lewis and Clark.
- Live Storytelling – Guided by BIPOC leaders, historians, and Native voices, we honor York’s legacy and reflect on the sacred ties between the Columbia River and Indigenous communities.
- Explorer & Outdoors Activities – Experience ceremonial demonstrations and education led by:
- Donny Adair, President of Oregon’s African American Hunting Association, reflecting on York’s legacy as a skilled hunter.
- Sharon Ross, “The Afrovivalist”, with a powerful outdoor survival demonstration.
- Willie Levenson, Founder of the Human Access Project, with water stewardship activities connecting community to the Columbia River.
- Cultural Heritage & Public Art – Hear from Darion Jones of the Portland Monuments Project, sharing updates on the York bust commissioned by the Mellon Foundation and the importance of preserving Black cultural heritage.
- On-Shore Cultural Celebration – Enjoy the Soul District Showcase with music, food, and spoken word performances and more
Together, we honor York’s pivotal role in history, reclaim Oregon’s rivers as spaces of Black pride and storytelling, and celebrate resilience, culture, and community.
