Shakespeare’s legendary tale of passion, fate and tragedy that has captured hearts for centuries is reimagined in State Opera South Australia’s brand-new production of Charles Gounod’s Roméo et Juliette, created and produced in Adelaide for its world premiere season this October.

With soaring arias, intense duets and Gounod’s sweeping romantic score, this is an opera that elevates love and heartbreak to sublime heights.

International stars lead the cast in this landmark production. Renowned Australian soprano Siobhan Stagg and celebrated tenor Kyle Stegall bring fiery chemistry to the title roles, their voices blending in moments of tenderness and passion. Acclaimed baritone Morgan Pearse returns to Adelaide to portray the witty and charismatic Mercutio.

At the creative helm is award-winning director Rodula Gaitanou, joined by Olivier Award-nominated designer takis, whose bold vision merges timeless storytelling with a contemporary edge. Together, they deliver a visually arresting world where love and destiny collide.

This production is the result of a prestigious international collaboration between State Opera South Australia, Irish National Opera and West Australian Opera.
