"DRUNKEN ANGEL,” directed by Akira Kurosawa, 1948, 102 minutes. Film with English subtitles. This was the first Kurosawa film – an atmospheric noir-inflected low life melodrama - to feature Toshiro Mifune, and they were to collaborate 15 more times. The movie is soaked in post-war pessimism, dissipation and poetic fatalism, symbolized in the shots of the oily, malaria-ridden swamp of a Tokyo dockside, but it is balanced by Mifune's (suggested) redeemability and Shimura's stoical humanism. Fascinating, highly enjoyable and filled with great scenes - not least the slippery battle to the death in a paint-filled corridor.
