This two-part, weekly class series offers an in-depth exploration of The Words of My Perfect Teacher, Patrul Rinpoche’s renowned commentary on the preliminary practices (ngöndro) of the Longchen Nyingtig lineage of Tibetan Buddhism. Widely cherished by Tibetan practitioners and recommended by the Dalai Lama, this text serves as a foundational guide to inner transformation and the Buddhist path.Across two five-week sessions—Winter and Fall—participants will study the traditional sequence of teachings outlined in the book, following the class structure provided in the original course outline. Each 1.5-hour class will weave together guided study, discussion, and reflections led by Senior Teacher Fred Schwieg, who brings decades of experience practicing and teaching within the Shambhala and Tibetan Buddhist traditions.
The Words of My Perfect Teacher is known for its lively, accessible style. Patrul Rinpoche clarifies profound Buddhist principles through stories, direct advice, humor, and practical examples drawn from everyday life. The text introduces essential teachings common to all schools of Tibetan Buddhism, including impermanence, karma, compassion, and the inspiration to awaken for the benefit of all beings.
Because of the philosophical depth and traditional structure of the material, this course is not recommended for complete beginners to meditation. It is ideal for students who already have some familiarity with Buddhist practice and wish to deepen their understanding of the preliminary stages of the path.
This class will be offered in a hybrid format and will also be available via Zoom. To get the most benefit from the class and the practice, we encourage you to join in person if possible.
Participants are encouraged to attend both the Winter and Fall sessions in order to experience the full arc of the material, though each segment will also stand on its own.
