Come join us for a rare re-enactment of early 20c. silent cinema at the University of Pittsburgh: live piano accompaniment by the pianist and composer Tyler Stoner with an introduction by silent-cinema scholar Anna Kovalova, followed by a screening of Russia’s 1914 first feminist film!
Admission is FREE, but we ask you to register via the link: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/1p1sluTejqSgMPanBJVebyh2_wTMuHFIy3TMO6jxFasQ/edit
To honor Women’s History Month, we are screening the first Russian feminist film about a strong woman doctor. The heroine, Anna Betskaya, has made a brilliant career as an obstetrician-gynecologist and medical scholar. Her husband Nikolai feels neglected and starts an affair with a young waitress, who soon gets pregnant. Later, the two women decide to work cooperatively at the doctor's office and raise the baby together.
While watching this unconventional early melodrama, you will delve into the atmosphere of a 1910s motion picture theater.
Coffee and treats will be served after the screening.
