Celebrate the longest nights with dramatic Solstice myths of mystery and light. Music and song on guitar, synth and harp complete the magic.
About this Event

Celebrate the Winter Solstice with humorous tales and legends of light accompanied by folkloric and original music and song. Diane's theatrical retelling of traditional tales includes the beautiful Scandinavian story: Balder and the Mistletoe, the Greek myth: Ceyx and Alcoyna and Evergreen legends of the Cherokee. A master storyteller, Diane Edgecomb embodies the characters and scenes in each tale bringing the stories vividly to life. Songs evocative of the season and lovely instrumental melodies played by Celtic harper Margot Chamberlain and multi-instrumentalist Tom Megan provide interludes and accompany the tales. This beloved Boston (JP) event offers a delightful look at the stories behind today's winter holiday traditions, opening up the celebration to its ancient pagan roots.

There will be no intermission, but complimentary Refreshments, including the warmth of a Wassail Bowle, will be served at the end of the performance in the adjacent church hall.

St. John's sanctuary is large enough for easy social distancing. It is located on Roanoke Street. Doors open at 1:30 pm. Masks optional, however all current Covid-19 safety recommendations for performance venues in MA will be followed.

Order the companion CD or a Video link to the recorded performance to share this unusual Winter Solstice event with friends who are far away. "The Winter Solstice in Legend and Song!" Double album with companion booklet on "Winter Solstice traditions" is available on the ticket section of this Eventbrite site. The Greek Myth of "Ceyx and Alcyona the Halcyon Birds of Peace" (see image above) returns again this year. The storytelling piece is accompanied by harp and synth, with haunting Greek melodies sung by Margot Chamberlain. Diane's unique retelling preserves the ancient mystery of this classic Solstice myth while bringing to light new meaning.
