Painshill celebrates the 300th anniversary of the birth of William Gilpin (1724-1804).William Gilpin was a Church of England cleric, schoolmaster and author. He is best known as a travel writer and as one of those who originated the idea of the Picturesque.
William Gilpin visited Painshill twice, once in 1765 and then again in 1772.
This summer, Painshill will display Gilpin’s sketches in-situ in the landscape. So you can compare his drawings from 1772 with the view today.
