Among several rom-coms from 1998 that grew up to become classics (YOU'VE GOT MAIL! THERE'S SOMETHING ABOUT MARY!), THE WEDDING SINGER stands out as the first (and arguably best) romantic pairing of Adam Sandler + Drew Barrymore.Sandler plays Robbie, a burnt-out singer at weddings and bar mitzvahs who aspires to become a real musician. While working a wedding, he meets the new waitress Julia (Barrymore), who is kind, effervescent, and impossible not to love. The catch? Both Robbie and Julia are engaged to human pieces of garbage. Robbie is quickly saved from a lifetime of misery when he's left at the altar, but Julia is still head-over-heels in love with total douchebag Glenn and set on becoming Mrs. Julia Guglia. While mending a broken heart (and when he's not writing the best breakup song of all time), Robbie puts his wedding industry knowledge to good use by helping Julia plan her wedding. All their friends notice the sparks flying, but both brush it off and claim they're totally just friends. Suuuuure....
THE WEDDING SINGER features a fantastic supporting cast: Sandler's frequent collaborator Allen Covert, Christine Taylor, Ellen Albertini Dow, even Billy Idol! The soundtrack is even better: David Bowie, The Smiths, more Billy Idol, and two originals by Sandler that are quite possibly the best breakup and love songs ever made.
